Chia seeds are a flowering plant of the mint family. It is native to Central and South America. The word chia means oily. In Maja it means energy. Chia seeds were one of the three main foods of the Aztecs. It was used as a grain and also pressed for oil. It is rich in dietary fibre, contains high levels of an omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid and is a source of plant protein.
Chia seeds can be used in cakes, muesli, yoghurt, puddings, soups and any kind of side dish.
